Dr Haddaps said that he found himself becoming swept up by the moment in the middle of a social gathering, when his thoughts started to wander away from what he wanted to accomplish.
Dr Johnstone said the key to staying grounded was to not get caught up in what others were doing and to focus on your own goals.

Dr Haggins said that when he started learning how to focus and stay focused, he felt he could be more successful in the world.
“I found it really hard to keep myself engaged and engaged with anything that I was doing.
It’s like if you’ve been to a restaurant where you want to eat, but you don’t know where to start, you just go straight to the front door and there’s a little bit left and then you just wait for a bit longer.
It wasn’t a real fun experience, but it worked,” he said.
Dr Atherton said that you have a lot more control over your attention and you can control your thoughts and your actions.
“If you look at the example of the person who has just got back from a trip to South America, it’s actually easier for you to think about those things than it is to get back from an extended trip,” he explained.
“It’s really a matter of finding your way back to a routine, to what you normally do, and that’s what you have control over, so it’s not about the outside world, it is about what you do in your mind and what is in your heart.”
Dr ATHERTON said that staying focused is the key for maintaining a healthy mental state and being present for others.
“So the key thing is to remember, it doesn’t matter what you look forward to, what you are excited about, what is exciting to you, it only matters what you really want to do and what your real priorities are, what your life goals are, and it’s about finding your priorities, not worrying about it, and just getting on with it,” he continued.
“And then when you find those priorities, you have time to be present for yourself and for others, and also be there for yourself.”
Once you have found those priorities and you know them, you are able to keep on moving, you’re able to stay on track, you don�t have to worry about everything happening in the background, and if something doesn’t go your way, you can just move on and do it again.
“Dr Johnston said that it was important to focus more on what matters to you than what is expected of you.”
This is really the hardest thing to do, because you have no control over it, you know what’s expected of them, and so if they want you to do something, then they’re going to get you there,” he told ABC Radio.”
But what we’ve discovered is that once you’ve made a conscious effort to stay present for other people, you’ve got a much greater chance of success than you might expect.
